State register of personal data is going to be liquidated

On May 22, 2013 a Law "On amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine to improve the personal data protection system" (the Law) was forwarded to the President of Ukraine for signature.

In the event the President signs the Law, the functions of monitoring compliance with legislation on personal data protection shall be transferred from the State Service on Personal Data Protection to the Ombudsmen and the courts.

The Law also amends the article 9 of the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of Personal Data", abolishing the registration of personal databases.

Within three months since the entry into force of the Law, the Cabinet of Ministers shall have to destroy the applications on registration of personal databases, as well as to eliminate the State register of personal databases deleting the data it contains.

In the event the President signs the Law, the above rules shall take effect from the 1st of January 2014.
